Puškaš

Topoljski dunavac, also known as Puškaš, is 10 kilometres long. It was made 150 years ago when Austrian-Hungarian authorities decided to regulate the flow of the Danube which used to erode the banks and deprive the ploughmen of fertile soil. After the embankment near Draž had been built, the Danube was diverted towards Batina, and Topoljski dunavac stretches from Draž to the west and to the north near Gajić and Topolje, to Hungarian border and into Hungary. Its banks are covered with cane, reed and water plants thus making it an ideal nesting place for swamp birds and a hatching ground for different fish species, all of them finding ideal preconditions for growth and breeding here. During the entire flow of Topoljski dunavac, it is possible to catch fine specimen of tench and perch. There are also good chances of catching a carp, especially before sunset, as well as catfish. Until gibel carp appeared in Topoljski dunavac, it was possible to catch fine specimens of gold crucian carp.  However, gibel carp took its toll and ousted the autochthonous fish species from this fishing oasis, thus taking the leading role.
